A visionary’s support
In memory of Dr. Robert Spicer
As Project Vision’s first private donor, Dr. Robert Spicer understood the importance of raising awareness about vision care and the early detection of eye disease.
In 1993, Dr. Spicer was diagnosed with macular degeneration and told by his doctor there was no treatment. Twelve years later, when his vision began to worsen, he met Dr. Michael D. Bennett, who was enrolled in a clinical study for an experimental treatment drug, called Lucentis. Using Lucentis and a combination of other drugs, Dr. Bennett was able to help Dr. Spicer regain his sight and retain his quality of life.
Through this experience and many office visits, Dr. Spicer came to understand the need for all Hawaii residents to have access to proper vision care. When he learned of Dr. Bennett’s plans for Project Vision to provide free screenings for the early detection of not only eye diseases but also other health disorders, he readily became a supporter. Although Dr. Spicer recently passed away, his continued support of Project Vision allows us to further our mission to enhance the quality of life by improving sight, preventing blindness and advancing medical knowledge through research. May we honor Dr. Spicer through our commitment to preserve the precious gift of vision.
