Clubs around island host 2-week tour by Project Vision Hawaii Bus starting Friday.
The BIG BUS on the BIG ISLAND!" That's the rallying roar of the Lions Clubs of the Big Island, as they host the Project Vision Hawaii Bus on a two-week tour of Hawaii County starting Friday.
The Lions Clubs on the Big Island -- Akaka Falls, Hamakua, Hilo, Hilo Crescent City, Kohala, Kona, Puna, Waiakea, Waikoloa and Waimea -- are shipping over the Oahu-based outreach unit for free eye screenings Sept. 3-14.

Retina Institute of Hawaii Published its First Annual Industry Journal.

Retina Institute of Hawaii, the pacific region’s premier vision care practice recently launched a new industry journal and was honored with the Hawaii Governor’s Innovation award, and Hawaii’s best doctor award.
Retina Institute of Hawaii (RIH) recently received the Hawaii Governor’s Innovation Award from Governor Linda Lingle for being one of the nation’s leading retina treatment practices. The Institute is currently participating in 13 clinical trials, including the NeoVista Epi-Rad Radiotherapy System, which delivers a targeted burst of radiation to the retina, used to treat Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration. The trials have been a great success and patients in the trial have seen their vision improve. READ MORE

Retina Institute of Hawaii Offers Tips For Healthy Vision Awareness Month

Just in time for Healthy Vision Awareness Month in May, the Retina Institute of Hawaii offers the following tips to ensure one’s eyesight:
1: Avoid sugar and foods high in saturated fats, as these could lead to the development of diseases like diabetes, which can have devastating effects on vision.
2: Consume essential vitamins and other micronutrients that support healthy vision. For example, vitamins A, C and E and zinc slow the development of advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). READ MORE
Retina Institute Of Hawaii Raises $1,400 and Conducts Over 50 Free Retinal Screenings For Step Out: Walk To Fight Diabetes

As part of its ongoing commitment to raise awareness of diabetic eye diseases, Retina Institute of Hawaii participated in this year’s Step Out: Walk for Diabetes. The Oahu-based ophthalmology practice raised $1,400 for the walk and performed over 50 free retina screenings through its Project Vision mobile screening unit. A single screening takes about 10 minutes and can detect the early signs of diabetes along with other vision-impairing conditions. READ MORE

Eye-Catching Van Performs Simple Exams

HONOLULU -- An RV is eye catching in more ways than one. "The goal of Project Vision is to provide a free screening service for eye diseases in under-served communities," said Dr. Gene Ng with the Retina Institute of Hawaii. When the nonprofit eye center rolls in, the screening starts for anyone who wants to get to see how healthy their eyes are. Inside the vision van, doctors get a good look inside the eye. "We have special cameras that allow us to obtain images of the retina in just a few seconds," Ng said. READ MORE

Karl Waite, MD has joined the Retina Institute of Hawaii after completing his ophthalmology training in New York. Waite began his surgical career with the Mt. He has a strong background and interest in the development of new drugs and was a member of the management team of Eyetech, where he contributed to the development and launch of Macugen, the first anti-VEGF treatment for wet macular degeneration.
