Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion
(BRAO)

Partial or complete loss of vision due to high blood pressure

Condition

BRAO blocks the small arteries in the retina and poses significant risks to vision. The most common cause of BRAO is a thrombosis, the formation of a blood clot.

Risk factors

High blood pressure

Symptoms

Symptoms of central retinal artery occlusion include painless loss of vision in one eye. Vision loss may be complete or partial.

Treatment

Following BRAO, vision can range from normal to extremely limited. If you have had BRAO or high blood pressure, regular visits to your ophthalmologist are essential.
